2008 USILA Division I Scholar All-Americans
Army's Craig Massie was named an United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Scholar All-American on Sunday as part of the NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship weekend. Massie also earned first-team recognition on the Lowe's All-Senior All-America squad this past Saturday.
As a senior defender, Massie was named Second-Team All-Patriot League at the conclusion of the 2008 regular season. Massie started all 15 games for the Black Knight defense that finished sixth in the nation in scoring defense with a 7.13 goals against average. The Black Knights earned the No. 1 seed in the Patriot League Tournament with a 5-1 League record this year that included a win over archrival Navy.
Massie owned a 3.19 grade point average as a Life Science major with a Systems Engineering tract. Also a two-time Patriot League Honor Roll recipient, he has made the Dean's List for six of his seven semesters at the Academy thus far.
Massie is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and serves as a Section Leader, Academic Officer and Squad Leader within the Corps of Cadets. He is also a Close Quarters Combat Training Sergeant responsible for training over 2,000 Cadets combat moves.
A former Congressional Intern for Representative Paul Gillmor from the 5th District of Ohio, Massie was responsible for doing research, providing Capitol Tours and dealing with constituent concerns. He also interned in a Microbiology Research Laboratory at Stony Brook University for three years, helping to develop a new kit which aids in the administering of drugs to patients through an epidural without harming their spinal cord.
Massie is the 13th Patriot League player to earned USILA Scholar All-American status and the third from Army, joining Sean Turner (1994) and James Yastrzemsky (1997). The Patriot League has had at least one honoree the last six years.
In 1989 the USILA Scholar All-America Program was established to recognize student-athletes from USILA member institutions who have distinguished themselves academically, athletically and as citizens of their communities. The USILA Selection Committee selects an overall team representing Division I, II and III. The Scholar All-Americas are recognized at the annual Lacrosse All-America Banquet.
